Rocket Lobster

Yet another sea creature design. Told you I like ’em.
But this one was unintentional. My daughter saw it on the shelf and said it looked like a lobster.

Inspiration comes and goes quickly…

This is one of my earliest builds, maybe it’s my first or second. I had inspiration after finding an old computer mouse and some parts that were from the back of an electric razor I had.
I quickly built up the top half of the main body but soon ran out of ideas on how to proceed and it ended up being shelved. It sat for a long time and gathered dust, but ideas on how to finish escaped me.

Somewhere along the line I found a part that was a suitable bottom. Then it sat.

Then a couple of months ago inspiration returned. I don’t know where the idea came from but it worked. I built up a rocket pod for the side using parts from an airplane kit. Just one problem…I only had parts to make one. Then it sat again as I researched moulding and casting. I was determined to make a duplicate and get this project built.

My first attempt at creating a mould didn’t go well. So my second attempt was better but a lot of the details were lost. Darn air bubbles. So I cut the end off my original and reworked it so it was thicker and made a new mould from it. I cut the ends off my duplicates and attached the recast details. Satisfaction.

I used Smooth-On products for the mould and casting duplicates. I found them really easy to use. Making a good mould is an art and I want to get better at it. Learning how to do this really opened up new doors. I’m excited to do more. I see casting my own pieces for sell.

This is heavy and looks cool. I will add a thruster and some more details to the rear section and add panel lines. And then he gets a coat of red paint.
